Experience

I have taught high school math in Texas for 8 years, including both regular and pre-AP level classes. I specialize in Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2. For 5 of those 8 years, I was the Geometry content-team leader at Colleyville Heritage High School in Grapevine, TX. I voluntarily retired from teaching in 2013 in order to pursue other career paths. Many of my former students have told me that my class was the first math class they ever enjoyed, because A) I try very hard involve conversation and laughter during class, and because B) I try to present lessons in a step-by-step manner that reflects the thought processes of someone who does not have a strong math background. I approach tutoring in a friendly, encouraging manner. I understand that math can be intimidating and frustrating, so I do my best to walk through each problem at a speed that you, the student, are comfortable with. I try to use as much of the tutorial session as possible to work WITH the student, instead of just giving a series of problems to work independently. When tutoring, I make an effort to reinforce the mathematical methods that are taught by the teacher, because often times a teacher wants a question answered in a certain manner, and I try to support that. However, I will also teach alternative methods and mathematical shortcuts to each problem, in order to provide students with a clearer understanding of the whole concept, and to allow students to choose the method of solving with which they feel most comfortable. While regular-level students may make up most of my tutoring clients, I have been able to help pre-AP level students master--not just pass--some of the most challenging concepts they will face, like geometric constructions and proofs, algebraic factoring, quadratics, and logarithms. If you would like a little more information on my background as a teacher, feel free to check out my teacher website that I used last year (2012-13), by cutting and pasting the following URL: https://sites.google.com/a/chinaspringisd.net/somerville-math/

Hobbies

In addition to teaching, I also served as a varsity assistant football and softball coach. Obviously this brings to mind a certain stereotype; however, I believe that experience has helped to develop me as an excellent teacher and communicator, and certainly it helps me relate to young athletes. I spend my free time outdoors: I'm a competitive distance runner, and I enjoy camping/hiking/climbing when I have time to get out of town.
